When the first missionaries left the Church of Zakarum, they were unprepared for the harsh weather and dangerous landscape that greeted them. In response, the church began training holy warriors named Paladins to defend their charges. They were named ‘Protectors of the Word’ and were revered by those they visited thanks to their fighting prowess and great stories. With the word spread to the major cities of the west, the Paladins retired back to the church. They were called up again a few decades later for a second campaign, however those they were unable to convert were deemed evil, suspected of being possessed or corrupted. A rebellion against this way of thinking arose within the Paladin ranks, who believed that the Three Prime Evils were the true source of corruption. With their new mission, the rebels left their brethren behind and travelled west. The player is a member of this faction.
The Paladin uses his faith as his shield, and will stand up for what is right and wrong. Because of this, many believe the Paladin is merely a battle-ready zealot, though others will appreciate his value and trustworthiness as a party member. The Paladin will not succumb to worldly temptations in case they are deceptions. Originally trained as a protector, the Paladins skills are suited to melee fighting. As part of this, he has the ability to cast auras, which can extend over others.
In this video I go over the paladin skill tree and talk about the changes made in Project Diablo 2. I talk about what skills and builds I think will be viabl.
The Paladin’s skills fall into two main categories; auras and combat skills. Due to the number of different auras he is able to cast, these are further separated as:
Combat Skills | Defensive Auras | Offensive Auras | |
Level 1 | Sacrifice Smite | Prayer Resist Fire | Might |
Level 6 | Holy Bolt | Defiance Resist Cold | Holy Fire Thorns |
Level 12 | Zeal Charge | Cleansing Resist Lightning | Blessed Aim |
Level 18 | Vengeance Blessed Hammer | Vigor | Concentration Holy Freeze |
Level 24 | Conversion Holy Shield | Meditation | Holy Shock Sanctuary |
Level 30 | Fist of the Heavens | Redemption Salvation | Fanaticism Conviction |
Without the use of special equipment, the Paladin is only able to activate one aura at a time, however they are still an invaluable skill. In addition to strengthening his party, some auras will weaken the enemy.
Name | Focus |
Auradin | Runewords that strengthen auras. |
Dragon Paladin | The skill ‘Holy Fire’ paired with the right equipment. |
Hammerdin | The most popular Paladin build in Diablo II. As the Paladin thrives in close combat fighting, this build can teleport into a large group of enemies and use the ‘Blessed Hammer’ to inflict a lot of damage. |
Smiter | The skill ‘Smite’. Also normally has expensive gear like Exile Shield. |
Zealot | The skill ‘Zeal’. Can be complemented by ‘Fanatacism’ for a speedy and effective series of hits. |
Trivia about the Paladin in Diablo II
- The character has no passive skills.
- While a Paladin can only use one aura at a time, multiple Paladins within a party can use different auras to stack them atop one another.
- The Paladin in Diablo II is voiced by Larry B. Scott, who has also appeared in Seinfeld.

The Smiter is a Paladin build that relies on the Smite skill. Smite is an attack that always hits and stuns the target.
Regarding the skill points distribution, there are two popular ways of playing as a Smiter:
- Stock Smiter: This version invests 20 points in Smite and also in the following skills:
- Holy Shield: Apart from its defensive bonuses, this skill increases Smite’s damage as well.
- Fanaticism
- Defiance: It’s an optional skill as it increases only your defense and not the Smite’s damage
- The 5th skill is depending on your choice. One recommended option is to spend points on Vengeance in order to deal with physical immune monsters.
- One PointSmiter: This version of the build only spends one single point in Smite and invests 20 points in the skills below:
- Holy Shield: It’s the Smite’s synergy.
- Fanaticism
At this point, you will have spent 47 points, so there will be 63 points remaining.
There aren’t any other skills required for this kind of Smiter. Thus, you’ll have enough points to merge with another Paladin build.
Some of the most popular options are:
- Max out Vengeance and invest points in Resist Auras (Cold, Fire, and Lightning) to deal with physical immune enemies. In addition, Resist Fire, Cold and Lightning have the benefit of increasing the maximum resistances.
- Max out Blessed Hammer. Vigor and Blessed Aim. This way you will have a viable Hammerdin, with a one-point Concentration. In order to be able to cast Blessed Hammer, you have to get Heart of the Oak available in your inventory.
- Max out Zeal and Sacrifice. However, this route seems like a Zealot build rather than a Smiter.
- Max out Fists of the Heavens and Conviction.
- Max out Holy Shock, Resist Lightning, and either Vengeance or Salvation for Lightning smite damage.
- Weapon: Last Wish or Grief
- Armor: Chains of Honor or Enigma
- Shield: Exile or Herald of Zakarum. Zakarum is preferable because it increases further Smite’s damage and it provides higher resistances. Exile is better in the case you use Steelrends instead of Dracul’s Grasp, for the life tap effect.
- Helmet: Guillaume’s Face or Crown of Ages
- Gloves: Steelrends or Dracul’s Grasp
- Boots: Gore Rider
- Rings: Bul-Kathos’ Wedding Band, Raven Frost or rares with health bonus
- Amulet: Highlord’s Wrath
- Belt: Verdungo’s Hearty Cord
You should equip a Raven Frost Ring or place a Cham Rune into your Crown of Ages in order to prevent freezing.
Smiter Build Stats
Strength: Invest enough points here so you can equip your endgame items.
Dexterity: It’s recommended to spend enough points until you reach the maximum block chance (75%)
Vitality: This is an important attribute, so invest all the remaining points in your Life Pool.
